Navigation For You

Novice & Experienced Hikers

The ‘Navigation For You’ courses I design are specific to your personal, group or club needs and are more flexible in how they are delivered depending on your personal development and time. The mountain navigation courses I deliver can be one or two day course. One day navigation courses do not involve long hikes, they concentrate on skills that you want to refresh or develop. All my mountain navigation courses include map reading and using a compass. You will realise you can navigate and do know enough, you just need the confidence to use the skills you have.

Navigation for those that want to build on existing experience

This course will review the fundamentals of navigation and establish what skills you need to work on. We will then begin to explore combined techniques to navigate about the hills, including map reading, taking a bearing and walking on a bearing accurately. Contouring and using natural features to navigate and re-locate will be explored and practised. Planning a route and dividing the route into recognisable navigation legs will also be practised. Night Navigation

Poor Visibility, Night Navigation

We will pick a day with poor weather, misty, still conditions are ideal. The intention will be to navigate into the darkness hours, paying detailed attention to the ground and features close around us. Sometimes being able to see features at a distance can in fact distract you, navigating in poor visibility, although a challenge makes you pay attention to the slightest change in the landscape. Your overall confidence and skill level will improve with this course as you see that it is possible to navigate safely in the hills at night with good planning, equipment and appropriate equipment.

The Poor Visibility, Night Navigation Course covers some of the content below
  • Setting realistic objectives
  • Choosing the correct ground to practise
  • Navigation techniques
  • Working as a team
  • Micro features
  • Building a mental picture
  • Choosing the correct features to navigate to
  • Equipment and being prepared
Requirements

Previous experience hiking and navigating is necessary. Weather conditions will have to suit the purpose of the course. Some of the route will be covered after nightfall.
