Take a Mountain Navigation and Rock Climbing course. My flexible climbing courses cover climbing skills you will need to climb safely in Ireland. If you want to get to far flung places in Ireland you may need to know how to navigate with a map and compass to reach your destination. Try a navigation course to learn the fundamentals of reading a map and using a compass. If you want a more structured course try a Mountain skills or Rock Skills course. The courses run outdoors in a progressive program from being a novice to become a confident knowledgeable navigator and climber.

Mountain Skills Courses

The advantage of the Mountaineering Ireland (MI) Mountain Skills 1 (MS1), Mountain Skills 2 (MS2) navigation courses (Mountain Skills Scheme) is that there is a fixed syllabus with a clear progressive pathway for your skills to develop. We cover map reading, taking a bearing using a compass, night navigation and understanding contours, and lots more.There is however a registration fee for the scheme and you should register with Mountaineering Ireland. You do not need to be a member of Mountaineering Ireland to register for the scheme. Read more on my Navigation Courses Page. Rock Skills Courses

Join the Rock Skills Scheme and try a Rock Skills Introduction Course or a Rock Skills Intermediate Course run outdoors in a progressive program from being a novice to become a confident knowledgeable climber. There is however a registration fee for the scheme and you should register with Mountaineering Ireland. You do not need to be a member of Mountaineering Ireland to register for the scheme. My Climbing Skills courses can run indoors or outdoors depending on your requirements. The Climbing Skills courses are more flexible and can be designed to suit your needs, including complete novice courses and Learn To Lead Climb courses.
My Navigation Starter courses run outdoors only, no indoors power points just practical skills. Whatever the weather we have a great time with lots of great laughs and new skills learned.

(06) Mountain Skills 2, Wicklow, 07-08 February 2026

Lots of fun walking around the mountains in the dark. Honest! Mountain Skills Two teaches you all the skills you need. Learn the skills to get you home safely if you get delayed by weather or an accident. Learn emergency procedures, how to manage steep ground and how to plan a route home in the dark.

(07) Mountain Skills 1, Galtees, 14-15 February 2026

The Galtees is full of great historic features. Learn to find ‘The Dugout’ and ‘Dan Breen’s Hideout’. The course is about learning to navigate, not hiking long distances! A map and compass is supplied. I emphasise using a simple process that will build your confidence and allow you to enjoy your days in the hills. We will do two simple routes over two days and concentrate on observation and relating the map to the landscape and relating the landscape to the map.

(08) Mountain Skills 1, Comeraghs, 21-22 February 2026

Visit the Comeraghs and learn to find lots of hidden features. The course is about learning to navigate, not hiking long distances! A map and compass is supplied. (13) Rock Skills Introduction, Dalkey, 04 April 2026. Easter

Rock Skills Introduction is an ideal introduction to climbing outdoors for those who have never tried it before. Because all equipment is supplied and climbing time is maximised you will learn fundamental skills and techniques quickly. You will learn how to tie into the rope and how to move efficiently and safely on rock. Enjoying your time climbing is emphasised. Every effort is made to encourage and equip the participant with the skills and enthusiasm necessary to progress to the next stage of climbing.

(14) Rock Skills Intermediate, Dalkey, 05-06 April 2026. Easter

Easter Sunday and Monday. The Intermediate course takes two days and builds on the climbers existing skills. You will learn rope work, anchors, top and bottom rope systems and safe belaying. So by the end of the course the student should expect to have covered all the skills necessary to set up and use a top and bottom rope, belay safely and also have had the opportunity to acquire the skills to become a competent second a lead climber.
