Ken is a great instructor who is very knowledgeable about navigation and hiking. The course was entertaining, engaging, and packed with useful things to learn about map reading, using a compass, and navigating in the mountains.
A great course with lots of practical knowledge that I’ll definitely use on future hikes. Highly recommended!

Before the course I knew quite nothing about rock climbing, gear, techniques used, and at the end of the weekend  I did things which I thought I was not capable of. Very good trainer, full of knowledge and tact, very passionate about his work, Ken and his assistant Caroline, the same.  Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Just completed Mountain Skills 1 training in Wicklow, and Mountain Skills 2 in The Comeraghs with Ken. Two very enjoyable weekends spent on the mountains. Great group dynamics and Ken has a very easy way of passing on his knowledge leaving you very confident and well prepared heading into the hills day or night. Highly recommend.

I did a two day rock skills (intermediate) course with Ken and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to build their own skills of climbing/abseiling. Not only is Ken a brilliant Instructor but he kept us safe and sound all the while showing us (me) how to make knots,  place gear etc, many.. many times with great patience and laughs throughout. He did a wonderful job at teaching us the basics and helping us out with those slabby routes. Dalkey quarry is such a fantastic location for climbing. It was so much fun trying to figure out how to get to the top and be able to do it. Definitely gave me the confidence to do more outdoor climbing and hopefully get into trad climbing. Highly recommend it to anyone who wants to do something that would get you moving and thinking at the same time.

Navigation Skills and Climbing Skills

Take a Mountain Navigation and Rock Climbing course. My flexible climbing courses cover climbing skills you will need to climb safely in Ireland. If you want to get to far flung places in Ireland you may need to know how to navigate with a map and compass to reach your destination. Try a navigation course to learn the fundamentals of reading a map and using a compass. If you want a more structured course try a Mountain skills or Rock Skills course. Mountain Skills Courses

The advantage of the Mountaineering Ireland (MI) Mountain Skills 1 (MS1), Mountain Skills 2 (MS2) navigation courses (Mountain Skills Scheme) is that there is a fixed syllabus with a clear progressive pathway for your skills to develop. We cover map reading, taking a bearing using a compass, night navigation and understanding contours, and lots more.There is however a registration fee for the scheme and you should register with Mountaineering Ireland. You do not need to be a member of Mountaineering Ireland to register for the scheme. Read more on my Navigation Courses Page. Rock Skills Courses

My Climbing Skills courses can run indoors or outdoors depending on your requirements. The Climbing Skills courses are more flexible and can be designed to suit your needs, including complete novice courses and Learn To Lead Climb courses.
My Navigation Starter courses run outdoors only, no indoors power points just practical skills. Whatever the weather we have a great time with lots of great laughs and new skills learned.
